Update on Geneva 1990
An interesting footnote to the Rosenbloom Cup episode: Since the above
article appeared in the September '95 issue of theWorld Bridge News, published by the WBF, we turned to that organization for permission to reprint. That permission arrived well Within
24 hours, instead of the expected routine approval form, the following
fax was received from Mr. Jose' Damiani, President of the World Bridge
Federation:
"You can publish the article but you have to know and preferably publish our point of view. At that time we did not publish the reasons of an Appeals Committee decision. I strongly believe that today I can explain what the discussion was:
- First of all, the Conditions of Contest were clearly opposed to a redressed score after that delay.
- It is the players' responsibility to score well and the captain can check.
- The opponents argued and never gave up this result.
- Should they have given up, the discussion would still have been open to negotiations during the night after such a match, in order to avoid dishonest behaviour.
- The WBF Executive can't overrule an Appeals Committee decision which in that case was perfectly justified, even if everybody regrets that by the mistake of a playerÑwhich has the same consequences of a bid or a card mistake--the sport spirit was lowe
red by the players themselves, their opponents and others, and not by the Appeals Committee."
